A common scene on Crete: Dogs, chained to something, somewhere, wasting away. |
| |

This dog was spotted in the mountains north of Chania, 2 km away from the next inhabited village. Apparently he is guarding the border of the town. He is fed with trash.
| |

Stray dogs are popular shooting targets for animal torturers who own a gun. This poor fellow was shot. |
| |

Thomas found this cat in a gutter in the harbor town of Chania. She had a sling around her hip and was severely wounded. Nobody else would have taken any notice of the animal. If Thomas hadn't taken her with him, she would have suffocated - in the middle of town! |
| |

Acid was poured over this dog. |
| |

Another common occurrence: baby kittens that are brought in to be "put to sleep", in plastic bags that are tied shut, at temperatures of 30°. |

Beaten |
| |

Severe wounds inflicted on the animals by accidents, beatings, etc. are very common. If animal friendly people don't happen to spot the animals they just rot away in the dirt somewhere. |

The fate of thousands of dogs on Crete. |

One day before the Day of Holy Modestus (Dec. 18th), Patron of all animals, these "executed" dogs were found, hanged. Their skulls had been beaten in and their throats had been cut.

Pictures from January 3rd 2002:
| |
A typical scene: An animal resort in the mountains. What or whom this dog is supposed to be guarding is a complete mystery. In the front of the picture you can see a whole pig's hide (offal), which is meant to be the dog's food. |
| |
Another chained dog with a crippled hind leg, still showing open wounds. Again, there is offal in the front.
| |
This dog corpse was found beside the road. It's been there for some time. It's throat has been slit. |
| |
In these pictures, you see a chained bitch and her puppy, which wanders about free. In the front, a decaying dog's corpse; the dog was shot in the spine. We suspect that he is the puppy's father.

Both dogs must live on mouldy bread rests.
