Facts & Figures
Animal welfare activities on Crete cost approximately € 20.000,-
to € 25.000,- per month; among other things, for food, rent,
maintenance of the buildings, wages and more. A large part of it
is spent on the animal shelter in Nerokouro/Chania.
The organization is able to collect a large part of this money
from membership fees, foster parenthoods, donations and through support
from other large German organizations.
A lot of volunteers generously help with the organization, with
mediation or also on Crete, which helps keep the cost down.
The many food- and medical donations also play an important role
in keeping costs as low as possible.
This way, many barrels of food donations can be transported
to Crete by truck on a regular basis.
Veterinary costs can be kept low thanks to many the vets, who come
and help out on the island on a voluntary basis - not only for the
animal shelter, but also in castration projects.

Foreign Animal Welfare Practice
Ever since German people have been practicing animal welfare, they
have been receiving criticism about neglecting problems that
exist in Germany, about importing illnesses and about forming competition
for local animal shelters.
With regard to these aspects, we ’d like to say the following:
For us, animal welfare means:
- Actions, not words.
We act when we see that help is needed. If we are not in
a position to see it ourselves, we act when our attention
is drawn to a situation. And we think before we act.
- Animal Welfare beyond boundaries.
There is no definition of boundaries in our ideas about
animal welfare. If an animal is in need of help, we don’t
ask it if it happens to be German.
- Networking.
As much useful help as is possible for as many animals
as possible. This means working outside, as well as inside
the country. We can achieve this goal by working with
a large number of animal welfare organizations, animal
shelters and broadminded people.
- Collaboration above Competition.
Collaborating with our partners (shelters, animal welfare
organizations, foster homes) means acting in agreement
with each other. Almost all the animals we transport
into Germany are animals that can be mediated, which
don’t form any kind of competition for local animal
welfare cases.
- Responsibility.
Our veterinarians work on a voluntary basis and provide
responsible and individual care for the foreign animals.
The animals we fly into the country have been under professional
medical care and have been vaccinated. We remain available
for advice after their mediation.
- Solidarity.
The animals in many of our most popular holiday countries
don’t have anyone to lobby for them. They often
lead lives full of suffering and neglect and they have
a right to be noticed by us.
- Quality of Life.
In just as many cultures, animals have no value. Rather
than having to end up as a living target on a trash heap,
we’d like to think we’re able to offer them
a better future.
- Education.
Our feeling of responsibility towards animals in Germany
as well as those that are brought into the country, supports
the local networks we have managed to build abroad, and
also serves to stimulate a change of view towards human
contact with animals.
- Feedback
Our many examples of successfully mediated foreign animals
prove that there are a lot of people in Germany, who
wish to do something more than just keep animals, in
order to help the many lost and disrespected animals
from abroad.
- Vision.
Our dream is to achieve international animal welfare with
no boundaries, without useless discussions and justifications.
