QUICK CASTRATION ON CRETE

When the two German veterinarians Elke Eikholt and Anja Pankatz arrived on Crete in February, their purpose was ambitious: To castrate as many stray dogs and cats as possible!
There was no time for neither sun nor sightseeing. The women´s first visit to the Greek island was dedicated to the animals.
- This is a good way to contribute to the great work that Noah´s Arche is doing for animals, says Elke, bending over a dog being shaved and prepared for castration in Plakias on the south coast of Crete. Behind them numerous cages are lined up, filled with many dogs and cats waiting for their operation today.
- Of course, we can`t reach every animal in the area, but at least we help to keep the amount of stray animals lower. In most of the times, I would say these dogs and cats look healthy, there are obviously many people feeding them, but on Crete the situation in general is quite sad, says Elke.

According to the two German veterinarians, the only hope for better conditions in the future is to make the young generation conscious about the problem. A change can only come if the young people recognize the value of every animal.
A big applause to the two veterinarians - who managed to castrate thirty cats and six dogs during their two-day stay in Plakias!!
Last year a total of six hundred cats and dogs were castreted on Crete, and hopefully the same effort will be made throughout this year.
Noah´s Arche look forward to welcome volunteer veterinarians from Germany again during the summer of 2002, and you are welcome to bring your animal.
The organization depends totally on the work of volunteers, maybe YOU want to help?
