KastrationCastration programmes are active animal welfare.

In a lot of southern countries animal castrating is still a social taboo because it reminds humans of their own sexuality.

For us, it is one of the most important aspects of our work abroad, because only by controlled reproduction can we master the problem of the masses of feral cats and dogs.

Through our initiative pt Vets Wanted pt, we have succeeded in finding a great many vets for our programme. They will spend some days/weeks on Crete or in other countries, to treat animals and to vaccinate or castrate.

Agapi Beach HotelThe current excellent collaboration with several hotels on Crete began when Thomas Busch was talking to the hotel manager of a holiday resort (Herr Voskolakis / Agapi Beach Hotel), who showed interest in collaborating with animal welfare organizations. TUI-Environment Management - who were at that time also planning animal welfare campaigns on Crete - didn't hesitate and assigned Noah's Ark of Crete to carry out the campaigns. Consequently, more campaigns took place in Crete's Sun Hotel in the vicinity of the town Chersonissos and the resort Malia Park, 10 min. away from the town of Malia

Private individuals also provide support and locations for our castration programmes. Sonya und Emanuel from Villa Panorama, for instance, regularly let us use their Fitness room.

Im Hafen von Chania

The animals in the vicinity are caught for the purpose of castration and if possible, are released again in the same place afterwards.

blonder Enno

In the town of Pigi, the vets perform the castrations in a hair salon, which is transformed into a clinic for about 1 hour for this purpose (Since then Enno has become a blonde ;-)).

QUICK CASTRATION ON CRETE

When the two German veterinarians Elke Eikholt and Anja Pankatz arrived on Crete in February, their purpose was ambitious: To castrate as many stray dogs and cats as possible!

There was no time for neither sun nor sightseeing. The women´s first visit to the Greek island was dedicated to the animals.
- This is a good way to contribute to the great work that Noah´s Arche is doing for animals, says Elke, bending over a dog being shaved and prepared for castration in Plakias on the south coast of Crete. Behind them numerous cages are lined up, filled with many dogs and cats waiting for their operation today.
- Of course, we can`t reach every animal in the area, but at least we help to keep the amount of stray animals lower. In most of the times, I would say these dogs and cats look healthy, there are obviously many people feeding them, but on Crete the situation in general is quite sad, says Elke.

According to the two German veterinarians, the only hope for better conditions in the future is to make the young generation conscious about the problem. A change can only come if the young people recognize the value of every animal.

A big applause to the two veterinarians - who managed to castrate thirty cats and six dogs during their two-day stay in Plakias!!
Last year a total of six hundred cats and dogs were castreted on Crete, and hopefully the same effort will be made throughout this year.
Noah´s Arche look forward to welcome volunteer veterinarians from Germany again during the summer of 2002, and you are welcome to bring your animal.

The organization depends totally on the work of volunteers, maybe YOU want to help?
