Situation
Observant animal friends will be able to spot a positive development
in Agios Nikolaos, which has also been developing in other towns
of Crete during the last few years: dogs being walked on leashes,
feeding spots for stray animals and a greater awareness regarding
animal welfare matters among the local inhabitants.
Unfortunately, just a few minutes away from the busy town filled
with tourists, typical animal welfare problems are painfully
apparent though. .

Short chain, grown in collar, pregnant.
This dog is a typical example of Cretan animal suffering.
Animal Welfare
The local animal welfare organization „Friends
of the Animals“ has been active since 1998. The English
woman Ann Adamaki, married to a Greek man, has been living on
the island for 28 years and is now the president of the organization.
The group has 50 members.

Thomas Busch tells Ann Adamaki about the support organization’s
mediation system:
Every dog that is transported from the island by Noah’s
Ark’s support organization, is micro chipped and ist mediation
is documented right until the moment t reaches its new home.
Activities
The extremely active animal welfare group, which exists of volunteers
only, takes care of 6 feeding spots in Agios Nikolaos and 3 in
Elounda.

The Feeding spots offer dried food and water.
They are checked and refilled on a regular basis by he animal
welfare workers.

Castration projects and Education are also regular
activities, organized by the animal welfare organization.
Needs and Plans
The animal welfare organization needs about 200 kg of dried
food each month. They plan to set up an animal welfare taxi.
