News: Letter from Vesna Jones
(Founder/President of Greek Animal Rescue) to AlphaTV --> letter fom Vesna Jones

Greek Media in action against Animal Welfare! The Report: Last week, several Greek newspapers and TV stations began a virulent and dirty campaign against local and foreign animal welfare, in both Athens and all over Greece. Their opinion is clear: They are claiming that animal welfare workers sell dogs to foreign animal research laboratories or to the fur industry. The Campagin against animal welfare workers was intitiated on March 11th by Joanna Karagounio, President of the umbrella organisation for Greek animal welfare groups. Accompanied by a TV camera team and the police, she stopped a welfare worker, who is a member of the Keratsini team, at Athens airport. They confronted the animal welfare worker with their wild theories and informed the airline companies about a new animal welfare law in Greece. Info Page: An animal welfare worker from Keratsini describes the happenings on March 11th Info Page: The draft for the new law By claiming that this law had already been accepted, Mrs Karagouni and her team prevented the dogs from being flown out of the country. They also made harmful comments, which were broadcasted on TV. Info Page: Wording from the Broadcasting The report was shown during prime time, in the news report with the highest viewing. TV station Alpha TV is one of the largest Greek private stations. Other Greek media immediately took the bait, and began to publish further harming articles on animal welfare work. Info Page: Article from newspaper "Espresso", Monday 15.03.04 Info Page: Another article from newspaper "Espresso", Tuesday 16..03.04 This whole "Madness", which was caused by the Anti Animal Welfare Campaign, is described in a text on the Greek web site tetrapodologein.gr. Info Page: Article on tetrapodologein.gr – published by newspaper "ANTI" All original articles are available – further articles will follow... Consequences: The Greek Ministry of Agriculture accepted the lies that were told by the press for the truth, and informed the airport about the law and following reports. . Info Page: Circular from the Ministry of Agriculture to the airports Meanwhile, the dirt campaign is beginning to show serious consequences: Animal welfare workers from Athens report that they are not permitted to fly any animals out, and that their work is being seriously hindered.
Reactions: Animal Welfare workers in and outside Greece have reacted with indignation and bewilderment about the way this campaign of lies has been introduced, and are organising themselves to act against the reports. The first meetings between animal welfare workers and local authorities are taking place at the Ministry of Agriculture in Athens. Solicitors, who would like to clear up the matter, have come forth. When questioned, several airline companies have reacted uncertainly, and have stated that they will only transport stray animals if the required papers are in place. Several animal welfare workers in Athens are trying to get the required papers for their animals (veterinarian confirmation) and have been refused.
